What is Hospitality House of Charlotte?

Since 1985 we have provided, at no cost, shelter for out-of-town families in medical crisis. We assist overnight and day guests. While there is no charge to our guests, donations are requested and much needed.

Our house has 22 bedrooms, a sunroom, a well equipped kitchen, stocked pantry and dining area, a children's area with age-appropriate toys, a computer station, wireless access and game room with lending library.

Each floor features a quiet reading room, laundry facilities and portable cribs for little ones.

Is there a charge for staying with us?

There is no charge to stay at Hospitality House, but we do request and graciously accept monetary and in-kind donations.

Are there requirements for staying at HHoC?

  • You must have a referral from a hospital.
  • You must provide a photo ID.
  • All guests must check back into the house for the evening by 11:00 p.m.
  • Guests are expected to assist with simple, daily chores.

What is a Day Guest?

Guests who do not require an overnight stay. Day Guests may do laundry, shower and use our first-floor amenities (kitchen, computer station, sunroom and game room.) Day guests are welcome between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Note: Day guests must have a referral before arriving to use our facilities.

What is provided in each room?

Two twin beds, sheets, towels, clock radios and hair dryers. There are no phones or TV's in the rooms.

How many rooms can I have, and how many people can stay in one room?

We provide one room per patient with a maximum of three people per room.

Can we swap out family members?

Yes. Although there is only to be three people staying in a room at a given time, several family members can take shifts using the room throughout the day.

Can unmarried people share a room?

We have no constraints on who may voluntarily share a room.

If I am alone, do I have to share a room?

Because we receive more admittance requests nearly every day than we can fulfill, guests may be asked if they are willing to share a room. If the guest agrees, we place individuals together according to gender.

What time can I check in?

Guests may check in between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm.

Are children allowed to stay with us?

Yes. There are no age restrictions.

Is transportation available?

While Hospitality House does not provide transportation services, the area hospitals provide security accompaniment to and from our house during the evening hours or for those with physical needs.

Is parking available?

There are free, reserved spaces in the Carolinas Medical Center parking deck directly across the street from Hospitality House.

May I bring food?

Yes. We have a food pantry that offers basic food items, but you may also bring and prepare your own food. We have refrigerators available for both personal and shared items. We also provide a secure locker for storage of personal items next to the kitchen. Food is not allowed in the guest rooms.

How long can I stay?

Our standard stay is 21 days, after which a guest must apply for an extension.

Can I come and go as needed?

While our guests are required to check in for the evening by 11:00 p.m., if necessary you may leave at anytime to go to the hospital.

Can I receive emergency calls?

Yes, we answer the phone 24 hours a day.

What security is available?

We have surveillance cameras throughout the house and IDs are required to be admitted after check in. There are also lockable security boxes for personal valuables located on the main floor.

Is the house handicapped accessible?

Yes, we comply with all ADA requirements. We have a selection of handicapped rooms.
